Cambridge's combination of town and gown means that the city has always been a significant religious centre. Some of the college founders were moved by piety to help the university. Protestant reform and evangelicalism were preached from the church pulpits, theories of gravity and evolution expounded from the lecture halls. The Christian Heritage Tours – which leave from the Round Church (The) – are an excellent introduction to the religious history of the city. Each tour lasts one and a half hours and there's no need to book, just turn up.
