In celebration of the upcoming Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II -- a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the throne -- 147 Union flags fly over Oxford Street in London. The display of flags, entitled the “Great British Fashion Flag Showcase,” represents 147 years of fashion for the world-famous High Street.

The tradition of erecting the tall wooden pole in small towns and villages goes back to the 16th century. The pole is usually painted in the Bavarian colors of white and blue, and decorated with emblems depicting local crafts and industry.

Honest Tea erects a 30-foot recycling bin in New York City’s Times Square to launch the Great Recycle, a national call to action to increase recycling rates.

In Chatsworth, England, artist Shauna Richardson stands next to the Lionheart Project, a giant crochet sculpture of 3 lions reflecting the rich textile heritage of the East Midlands. The work will tour the East Midlands before moving to London's Natural History Museum as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The space shuttle Enterprise, mounted atop a NASA 747 shuttle carrier aircraft, flies over New York City. Originally housed at the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Enterprise will be demounted from the carrier plane and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum.
