Baggage Battles: LA Pictures

Mark, Billy, Laurence and Sally head to an auction in LA to try to profit on legally seized valuables at the largest police auction in the country.

Each year the Los Angeles Police Department handles billions of dollars of merchandise. Anything found, seized or kept as evidence in a criminal investigation is legally required to be destroyed or sold at auction upon case completion. Property Room auctions 850,000 items from the LAPD to the general public every year.

Before the actual auction starts, everyone is given an hour to go through and look at the items that are going to be auctioned off. There are over 300 items to bid on, so Sally, Laurence and all the buyers have to spend their time wisely.

Mark uses part of his preview time to examine the bags of jewelry. He focuses in on a gold pendant and a bag of jewelry marked “gold tone,” meaning fake gold. However, Mark thinks he sees a few pieces that are real -- and that might have been put in the bag by mistake.

The preview reveals an eclectic mix of items up for auction, including “mystery boxes.” These boxes are sealed and cannot be opened until they are purchased. They catch the eye of all our auction specialists.

Billy inspects one of the mystery boxes. He tries to figure out which one would be the best to bid on.

Laurence and Sally do the same thing as they examine all the mystery boxes.

Laurence checks out as many auction items as possible during the preview. The available mirror comes in handy as Laurence straightens out his hat.

As the preview hour winds down, all of the potential buyers finish up and make their way to the auction area.

Billy and Sally take their seats for the auction. Billy soon gets in on the action and starts bidding for items. This police auction, run by PropertyRoom.com, is one of the biggest in the US.

Sitting among other bidders, Mark is all smiles as he takes home some of the items he had been eyeing in the auction preview.

Laurence puts on his lucky leopard shoes for the LA auction in hopes that it will bring him and Sally some hidden gems.

The PropertyRoom.com auctioneer runs a tight ship and quickly works up the bids to try to get top dollar for the items being auctioned off.

Billy examines the mystery box that he won at auction. Wonder what's inside?
