Wickham's Farm Stand

Cutchougue, NY

Simplicity trumps all at this seasonal farm stand on the north fork of Long Island. Your only choices are plain or cinnamon cake donuts. Be smart and get a mixed bag. Chances are they'll still be hot, too.

Glazed and Infused

Chicago, IL

This Chicago newcomer is awesome. The Creme Brûlée is worth the trip alone. Imagine a gourmet Boston cream donut with a brûléed, hard sugar crust. Also available is the “Bacon Long John” with a strip of crispy bacon on top.

Top Pot Doughnuts

Seattle, WA

There's no way to visit Seattle without stopping at Top Pot. Their stores feature up to 40 different high-quality donuts with great coffee to match. Classics like the “Chocolate Old Fashioned” and the classic glazed are top sellers but try the crazy “Feather Boa,” with pink icing and shaved coconut, for fun.

Donut Man

Glendora, CA

This stand is open 24 hours a day, all year round and makes one of the greatest donuts of all time -- the strawberry-stuffed donut. About 8 whole, fresh, lightly glazed strawberries are crammed into a large, sliced, glazed yeast donut. It may look impossible to eat, but trust me, you'll find a way. Peach-stuffed is available during the winter months.

Doughnut Plant

New York City

These guys have been cranking out consistently great gourmet donuts for many years, way before the recent spate of newcomers. Both cake and yeast are always on hand in flavors like toasted almond and peanut butter with banana cream filling. If I'm within 40 blocks of their Lower East Side location, I'm uncontrollably sucked into their tractor beam.
