Get the lowdown about Mark's best moments living in the Peruvian jungle with the Machigenga.
1.Walking up to the big river pool with flat rocks at its side and realizing how perfect this place was for our project; all we had to do was gain acceptance into the village.
2. On my third monkey hunt when I was out on the left flank with Ronaldo and was afforded a clear shot in the branches high above me. My arrow only just missed the male and I realized that I wasn't as far from being a successful hunter with bow and arrow as I'd thought.
3. The mission to find the shaman and then the "painted stones"; he was a character and the journey was one of the strangest I've been on.
4. Rafting through the Pongo with Jose, Juan, Ronaldo, Lucio and Jocinto; they were very much affected by the place and those great slabs of rock looking as if carved by a divine hand gave me a feeling that we were indeed entering a place of great power.
5. Every single moment I had with Monkey-Face, particularly morning feeding time and the walks we went on together into the forest, even those when she peed on me.
6. Alone and down at the river one night just before nightfall, I suddenly had a big fat fish on the end of my line and a great fight ensued up and down the bank; it looked as if my luck was finally in and my sad record as a fisherman about to change. Tragically I messed it up and with a great leap out of the water my adversary broke the line. Even more tragically, I don’t think anybody even believed me.
7. Going on a trap-building mission with Jocinto; we had a laugh building our killer trap together and carrying the peccary back the next morning and it was a good bonding moment.
8. Olly and I canoeing down the Urubamba on our own in the dugout; one minute we'd be drifting peacefully through the jungle enjoying the birdlife and the next minute we'd be arguing as to which way to go as we were drawn inexorably into the next thunderous rapid.
9. The relief I felt at hitting the target in the archery competition. After the rafting debacle I was determined to score our team some points, not put us further back.
10. The final party and booze-up in the village. After the awful events of the previous three days, when we'd had to leave the village without even a farewell, all was forgiven and we were to be leaving on good terms after all.
