Coastal Chile

Overview
Coastal Chile has not been overdeveloped for tourists, so if you go at the right time of year, you can really feel like you're part of the community, enjoying long days of shopping, relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere. But beware of the big cruise ships that often dock here for day excursions. You'll want to go to your favorite places early to beat the crowds.

Hotels

Hotel Del Mar: This is the premiere property in Vina del Mar. Sam not only admired the view of the Pacific Ocean from the balcony, but also played various games in the Casino del Mar, which is also part of the hotel. It was on the top floor of the hotel, by the infinity pool, where Sam recovered from her late, late night of partying

Matetic Vineyards: This is the only winery in the coastal region of Chile that has guest rooms for the visitor who wants to stay overnight at a winery. Samantha stayed for one night and then rode through the vineyards on her bicycle to the winery itself. The Matetic Vineyards Winery is one of the most modern wineries in the whole country. It was here that Sam had her picnic overlooking the vineyards at sunset.

Hotel Brighton Bed & Breakfast: This is where Samantha met her friend Christina for a cup of coffee before going shopping. The Brighton has one of the finest lookout points in Valparaiso. It is located on the Cerro Conception.

Food/Restaurants/Bars

Marisqueria 'Los Portenos' Ofrece A Ud. Y Familia: Located just off the port of Valparaiso, this local, family-run restaurant is best visited in the daylight hours. Sam had the signature dish of 'Matjes con Pamesana,' or clams with parmesan cheese. It is best not to be in a hurry when you go here as the dish needs at least half an hour to cool down before it can be eaten.

Sights/Landmarks/To Do

Puro Caballo - Centro Turistico: This is where Sam came early in the morning before the huge crowds arrived in the afternoon from the cruise ships. This is a fifth-generation, fully working ranch where they breed Chilean horses and also perform the Chilean rodeo, which is the national sport in Chile. Visitors are also able to eat local cuisine such as spread-eagled barbecued lamb cooked over an open fire pit.

Shopping

Art in Silver Workshop: The owner, Victor Hugo, is a well-traveled silversmith. He has exhibited in craft fairs and markets all over the world, and will be pleased to show you his scrapbook. Sam bought a ring with a lapis lazuli stone.
