Montevideo

Overview

Home to about half the nation's population, Montevideo has a historical Old Town that dates to colonial times. The city is also surrounded by white sandy beaches.

Hotel

Plaza Fuerte Hotel: Samantha chose this hotel over the larger "chain" hotel in the city center, because of its location in the heart of the Old Town action, especially at night. Built in 1913, the hotel has a lovely Old-World charm and features such elegant touches as a solid brass elevator. It costs only $65 a night, too!

Pablo Alonso: Created by world-famous artist Carlos Paez Vilaró, this hotel (and residence) defies description. The building clings to a cliff overlooking the ocean and the Rio de la Plata. The all-white structure looks like it's made of white meringue. It's a great place to relax and watch the sunset, too.

Sights/Landmarks/To Do

Estancia Renacimiento: Visitors can get a South American gaucho experience and dinner here, without going deep into the hinterlands of Uruguay.

Shopping

Manos de Uruguay: This little shop features the work of designers whose goods are sewn and put together by women in the interior of the country. Here you'll find traditional woven materials, such as the poncho Samantha bought while visiting the gauchos.
