Punta Arenas

Overview
Overlooking the Straits of Magellan, Punta Arenas was in the past a large port for trade, but once the Panama Canal opened, its importance diminished. However, the city soon regained its popularity, this time as a place for experts in the wool trade. Today, the population of Punta Arenas reflects a mix of diverse cultures, from sailors to ranchers. Steeped in rich history, the area features some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Hotels

Hotel José Nogueira: This is the most authentic hotel in Punta Arenas. An extremely friendly, family-run place, it is a haven to come back to. The conservatory is also a restaurant, which serves superb food. A filet steak with king crab costs only $6!

Food/Restaurants/Bars

Leyenda del Remezon: Located near the port, this restaurant is one of the finest in Punta Arenas. Sam cooked and ate the Patagonian beaver here with Chef Luis.

Cerveceria Austral S.A.: The brewery is open for visitors to tour. Sam tasted the unfiltered beer straight from the tank and also took the microbrew made with calafate (a sort of wild blueberry) straight from the production line.

Sights/Landmarks/To Do

Camelio: This factory owns all the king crab boats in Punta Arenas. It is unlikely that a casual visitor to Punta Arenas would be allowed into the factory to see the processing of the crabs themselves, but they would be able to stand near the docks to see the crabs being unloaded at around 8 a.m.

Anthropologist: Maurice was Sam's friend in the market scene with the kawasquar people - the indigenous people of the area. Maurice is the most respected anthropologist in the region. He is the docent of the only museum dedicated to the indigenous peoples of South America and Patagonia.

Natura Patagonia: Ricardo was Sam's friend and guide at the Seno Otway penguin sanctuary. Ricardo is a respected naturalist and is available for hire on an individual basis.

Marcela Alcaino Orfebre: Marcela is the most respected silversmith in Chile. Sam found her collection of Tehuelche people jewelry at his shop. Marcela was recently commissioned by the government of Chile to produce museum pieces from these historic, indigenous people.
