Sand Masters' Favorite Summer Activities

From summer festivals to getting in touch with nature, find out the Sand Masters artists' favorite summer activities.

Three sand masters love to spend their summer days hiking: Kirk Rademaker prefers hiking the Sierras, Rusty Croft loves walking on the beach. Sue McGrew isn't picky: she loves anything involving walking, hiking, and exploring nature.

One of Rusty Croft's most loved summer activities is tossing a frisbee with friends.

Rusty Croft can think of no better summer treat than eating hot, fresh corn on the cob.

Andy Gertler loves to spend his summer nights camping.

Morgan Rudluff loves to spend her summers doing what she calls "Mega-beaching: beach volleyball, BBQing, beer-ing, lounging, and general heckling."

Morgan Rudluff's favorite summer treat: chowing down on some fresh ocean catch.

Morgan Rudluff also makes sure to make her annual pilgrimage to the Burning Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock desert.

A pair of sand masters are amphibious: Kirk Rademaker loves going to hidden swimming holes and Sue McGrew loves swimming in lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.

Sue McGrew is a fan of a true summer classic: road trips.

Matt Long says he has 'a passion for gardening which I do most every day.'

Andy Gertler and Matt Long like to pursue musical pastimes during the summer. Andy plays guitar around the fire pit with friends, or performing beach and park gigs with his band. Matt Long likes to play guitar most anywhere outdoors.

One of Matt Long's favorite summer activities is reading. "My favorite authors are Tom Robbins, Christopher Moore and Carl Hiaasan," he says.

"Did you guess Sand Sculpting?" quips Matt Long when asked his favorite summer activities. After all, what would any Sand Masters summer be without sand sculpting?
