It's hot. The ocean is shrouded in a mid-summer haze and the shriek of seagulls fills the air as the birds dip and float on the breeze, looking for scraps of food. Wandering couples, moms with strollers, grandparents and packs of teens all parade the narrow wooden highway that lines the beach. Stalls crowd together offering food, drink, toys and T-shirts - all the frivolous purchases of a summer weekend. This is the boardwalk, the most hallowed of American beach institutions. At night the boardwalk becomes a carnival with rides and games of chance and skill, as cool winds soothe the day's sunburns.
