Chincoteague Pony Swim
Chincoteague Island, VA
Seven miles long and 3 miles wide, Chincoteague Island offers a bevy of activities, including biking, clamming, fishing and boating. Once a year, the usually spacious shoreline becomes filled with visitors who gather to watch the famed Chincoteague Pony Swim, which celebrates its 89th year this July. Led by “Saltwater Cowboys,” a small herd is led across the Assateague Channel, and the first foal to reach the shore is crowned King or Queen Neptune. Proceeds from the swim help the island maintain veterinary care for these elegant equines.
