In a country profuse with waterfalls and other jaw-dropping natural phenomena, the cascading masterpiece of Aldeyjarfoss in northern Iceland stands alone. Encircled by a veritable moonscape of ancient lava bed terrain, in contrast to an interminable cobalt sky, the rushing falls play out the dialogue between fire and ice -- especially in winter when an icing of snow caps the site. Most unique, columns of otherworldly, dove-gray basalt book-end the waterfall as if to frame it.
