Batad Rice Terraces
Luzon -- the largest island in the Philippines -- is not only the country’s most populous, but the fourth most-populated island in the world. The island is famed for its rice terraces, often dubbed “stairways to heaven”; these paddies are even part of the UNESCO World Heritage list of cultural landscapes. Many of these paddies were built more than 2,000 years ago, some on slopes nearing 70 degrees and nearly 20 feet high!
