Ben Youssef Madrasa

Marrakesh, Morocco

Once largest Islamic college in Marrakesh, Ben Youssef Madrasa is a stunning example of traditional Moorish architecture and ornate décor. Since 1982, the building has operated as a historic site, open to the public. Don’t miss the prayer hall, decorated with inscriptions from the Quran, noting that decorations don’t depict plants, animals or humans – only geometric shapes. If you can, sneak away to explore the 130 dormitory cells that students once occupied – or test your voice in the famously echoing prayer niche.
