Go Speed Racer! The hardest thing about driving the two-lane Cabrillo Highway, which winds steeply up California's scenic coast, is keeping your eye on the road. With riveting sea views, jagged rock promontories, and untrammeled bits of wilderness abutting the road, this portion of the revered California Coastal Highway 1 winds through the central coastal portion, passing through Monterrey, Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties -- all the way to the misty surfer's mecca of Pacifica. Follow it to San Francisco, where you can ogle at the Golden Gate Bridge and the city's famed Presido National Park.
