Northland, New Zealand
With the Tasmanian Sea to her left and the Pacific Ocean to her right, this famous little lighthouse on a northern tip of New Zealand stands witness to the tidal clashing and mingling of these two bodies of water, a phenomenon that the local Maori people consider the meeting of the female and male energies. If that weren’t enough, Cape Reinga is also the point, in Maori mythology, where spirits jump into the sea on their way to the afterlife. That’s a powerful lot of symbolism for a little lighthouse, which is likely one reason so many travelers come to see her each year.
