These whirling dunes are not where you think they are. Located 150 miles from Los Angeles, this majestic Californian landscape was Hollywood’s secret for decades. In 1923, Cecil B. DeMille built the largest movie set in history here for his film The Ten Commandments -- the remnants of which are still being unearthed. Now, group hikes lead visitors through this unique ecosystem. For stunning travel photos you have to see to believe, like this one taken by Chris Burkard, it isn’t the magic of Hollywood. It’s simply amazing nature.
