Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam
Halong Bay in Northeastern Vietnam is as mystical as the origin of its name. According to legend, a family of dragons was called down from the sky to help defend the Vietnamese people from invaders; ‘Ha’ means ‘descent’, and ‘long’, means ‘dragon.’ Apparently, the descending dragons won. With its thousands of jagged limestone islets rising up from the emerald water, this bay is a fitting home for such fantastical creatures. As this traditional junk, or ancient Chinese sailing vessel, glides through the bay, its leaf-like sails flying high, one can imagine that it might be sailing home to a family of helpful dragons.
