Lisbon may get all the glory but Sintra, with its UNESCO-worthy streets, Arabesque hilltop estates and winding castle walls, may just change all that. A quick day trip from Portugal’s capital, Sintra boasts architecture from as far back as the 8th century. One especially spectacular site is the Gothic Quinta de Regaleira estate, with its green grottoes, hidden tunnels, a Roman Catholic chapel and a mossy subterranean tower called the Initiation Well.
