Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
It’s something from a childhood dream. A palace of ice, rooms with carved columns, vaulted ceilings, an ice-crystal chandelier, arches, exquisite ice art, reindeer-skin covered beds, an ice chapel and an Absolut ice bar where drinks are served in -- what else? -- chunky ice glasses. Deep in the heart of Lapland, nearly 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and never the same from year to year, this unique hotel melts each May but is rebuilt each autumn. This isn’t a simple little igloo, either, but a work of art with 85 rooms and suites made from 3,000 tons of ice. Guests receive complimentary winter outerwear clothing to beat the inside temperatures, which range from 16 to 25 degrees.
