Iglesia de San Rafael

Zarcero, Costa Rica

Located in Costa Rica’s central highlands, this magical garden could be a backdrop for Edward Scissorhands. Here, giant cypress bushes take the form of monkeys, motorcycles, elephants and even a bullring. The topiaries were designed and trimmed by park gardener Evangelisto Blanco in the 1960s and still attract travelers willing to skip out on a day of Costa Rica’s popular adventure activities -- surfing or zip lining -- to see the fantastical forms. Be sure to also stop in the charming Iglesia de San Rafael, known as the blue and pink church.
