Waves crashing, frigates soaring, albatrosses gliding to an elegant landing on a nearby island, and the sea wind whipping around you like briny caresses: Visit this vintage lighthouse in winter and you're likely to see humpback whales, too. About 45 minutes from the town of Lihue, this 52-foot-tall lighthouse once had a beam that reached 90 miles out to sea. Today, retired from duty, it’s Kauai's favorite tourist attraction and part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, replete with signage identifying a bevy of birds.
