La Meije, France

La Grave means “severe,” and that is an apt description for this small ski resort in the Alps. Dominated by La Meije Mountain at 13,064 feet, it’s known for its off-piste ski runs -- visitors navigate uncharted, virgin snow rather than packed and prepared terrain. With no groomed runs, trail maps or avalanche patrol, the risk is high -- which is exactly why this pristine peak is a magnet for extreme skiers and adventure junkies. Ski at your own risk.
