Nariño, Colombia
At first glance, the Las Lajas Sanctuary in the hilly country of southern Colombia is reminiscent of the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany’s Bavarian Alps. But the latter was the work of a mad king while the former is a basilica built where, in the 18th century, a blind girl regained her sight during a thunderstorm. A rural, neo-Gothic church on the border of Ecuador and Colombia? Just further proof it’s a big, wide wonderful world.
