You won't find any striped-shirted, singing gondolieri in Colmar's Little Venice. Instead, riverboats -- many bearing vegetables headed to market -- navigate the elaborate canal system that gives the old town its nickname. Located in France's Alsace region, the mood here is as German as it is French; visitors will hear both languages spoken as they explore the well-preserved medieval streets. Popular with locals and tourists, half-timbered houses, adorned with well-tended window boxes and pastel exteriors, hold family-owned shops, pubs and eateries.
