Hainan, China

At the very southernmost point of mainland China, Hainan Island dangles into the South China Sea. And at the very southernmost point of Hainan sits the Chinese city of Sanya, home to the Mandarin Oriental -- a resort so lushly tropical, with waters so aquamarine, that it feels more like Barbados than China. Nonetheless, with its delightful nods to Chinese design and architecture, a Chinese noodle house, a posh Cantonese restaurant and even classes with a kung fu master, this palm tree-ringed resort feels as wrapped in Chinese culture as a fortune cookie.
