Medina of Essaouira
The most memorable thing about Essaouira (pronounced “essa weera”) is the one thing you can’t see. Behind this western Morocco city’s 18th-century fortified walls are the expected Moroccan trademarks: the narrow alleyways, the women in white veils, as well as the smell of spices, fish and the sea breeze. However, it’s the wind that truly captivates. Aptly dubbed the “Wind City of Africa,” Essaouira’s breezes enthrall windsurfers from all over the world.
