East Java, Indonesia

When Mt. Bromo explodes against the night sky, it is a sight so staggering that even the stars shine back their appreciation. Located in the protected Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in the mountains of East Java, this active volcano is one of Indonesia’s most popular sites, frequented by locals and tourists alike. Every year, during the Hindu festival of Yadnya Kasada, the nearby Tenggerese people toss fruit, rice and flowers into the volcano’s crater. Mt. Bromo has been a sacred offering site since the 15th century, when, according to local legend, a barren princess was granted fertility by god Bromo, but with one caveat -- she must sacrifice her last-born child to Mt. Bromo.
