Mount Hood National Forest

Sandy, Oregon

Encompassing the northern end of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains and the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood National Forest is an easy 20-mile drive from Portland, yet it radiates wilderness. Home to Oregon’s largest mountain and the final leg of the Oregon Trail, explorers and locals alike come here to mountain bike, ski, snowshoe, mountain climb and camp. For those who don’t like to rough it, consider a stay at the historic Timberline Lodge. Built in 1937, it sits atop Mt. Hood at an elevation 6,000 feet above sea level. Take heart, the thin air might not be the thing making your head spin, it might just be the dramatic view.
