Neuschwanstein Castle

Schwangau, Germany

Originally built upon the ruins of another castle, this fairy tale palace served as a refuge for the shy King Ludwig II. Inside, the walls are gilded with Middle Age motifs and symbols including the swan, which seems fitting considering the castle's ugly duckling beginnings.
