Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

This walkway along the Muralla, or wall, of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old San Juan meanders past the fortifications of a city that never tasted defeat despite the best efforts of the English and Dutch. At night, locals say, the 450-year-old city comes alive with espiritu and santos, spirits and saints. Whether that’s true or not, it certainly comes alive with the thick, heavy beats of salsa, reggaeton and Latin music; soft Caribbean breezes; and the laughter of both young and old as they explore the city’s narrow, blue-cobblestone streets.
