The Lone Cypress, the official symbol of Pebble Beach, is one of the most popular sites along the 17-Mile Drive, a scenic thoroughfare flanked with golf courses, ocean views and impressive mansions. But the land wasn’t always considered so valuable. In 1860, a ranchman’s wife sold a 4,000-acre plot for $500; in 1862, Pebble Beach real estate was purchased at just 12 cents an acre. Today, the toll for nonresidents is $9.75 -- and that’s just to drive along the road.
