Soufriere, Saint Lucia
The Pitons -- 2 twin volcanic plugs on the southwestern coast of Saint Lucia -- confer with the clouds as they huddle together over the little tourist town of Soufriere. A landmark for seafaring sailors for centuries, the Gros and Petit Pitons are a symbol of this small country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While you can climb them, most people prefer to admire their towering presence while lounging on a white sandy beach nearby or drinking rum on the balcony of one of Soufriere’s many charming pastel-colored hotels. Regardless of how you choose to spend your time in Soufriere, the Pitons make a dramatic backdrop.
