Moscow, Russia

With its whimsical, multicolored domes, St. Basil’s Cathedral looks like something out of a fairy tale -- and the stories swirling about its construction add to the feeling. It’s true that Ivan the Terrible ordered the creation of what would become one of Russia’s most iconic sites to celebrate victory over the Mongols. It’s probably not true that he had its creators blinded, so they couldn’t make another building like it. But when you stare up at the cathedral’s fantastical soaring ceiling and see its exquisite painted archways, chances are you’ll never see another building quite like it.
