Like those nested Russian dolls, the mystical Taal Volcano is a volcano within a glittering, freshwater lake, which sits within a bigger volcano. Rising from the verdant island of Luzon, about 30 miles from Manila, the Taal ranks as the world's smallest volcano, as well as the Philippines' second most active, with 33 recorded eruptions. The Taal attracts birdwatchers, fishing enthusiasts and hikers, many of whom arrive on wooden boats via organized tours from Talisay Batangas, a 45-minute cruise away.
