Prayer flags flutter, sending out their small wishes to the untamed Himalayas surrounding Bhutan, the small Buddhist kingdom that is slowly and cautiously opening its doors to tourism. Famous for measuring “Gross National Happiness” and only recently permitting the use of televisions, this real-life Shangri-La now allows outsiders to explore the mysteries of the mountains and monasteries that make this formerly closed-off country so intriguing to travelers.
