Tulum Ruins

Quintana Roo, Mexico

While visitors to Cancun are likely to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with too many shots of tequila, those looking for a more serene setting can find it 80 miles south along the Yucatan Peninsula, in Tulum. These Mayan ruins, situated on limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, date to the 13th century and were once a trading post, particularly for turquoise and jade. Though a tourist draw, after marveling at the well-preserved structures, carvings and resident iguanas, escape the crowds down a path to a small but peaceful beach.
