Don’t let the fact that Varenna is an old fishing village conjure up thoughts of guys on the dock repairing nets. This hillside village overlooking one of the most beautiful lakes in northern Italy, Lake Como, is on the jet-set track but without annoying rich people throwing money around. Yes, George Clooney lives on the lake, but Varenna’s cobblestone streets, narrow alleys and family-run restaurants (most open only for dinner, by the way) grace a town ideal of strolling. Hike the hills behind it or linger over a drink on the waterfront before boarding a ferry to check out other postcard-perfect spots -- nearby Bellagio comes to mind. Bella!
