Vienna State Opera

Vienna, Austria

Step outside the Wiener Staatsoper -- Vienna’s state opera house -- and you’ll be immersed in a rich musical tradition. The building, originally built in 1869, is particularly well-known for being home to composers Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss in the early 20th century. Destroyed during wartime bombing in World War II, the building was restored and reopened with much fanfare in 1955. Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the world’s busiest music venues, with more than 300 performance days each year, including 50 to 60 operas and 10 ballet productions.
