Oahu, Hawaii

Big wave surfing was born on the shores of legendary Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii in the 1950s. From November to February, massive winter swells lift the surf to more than 30 feet, which sends a call out to every elite surfer on the planet. Top surf competitions, sponsored by Vans and Quiksilver, take place here every year.  The ancient Hawaiians believed that the waters of the bay were sacred, and a Hawaiian temple still stands on the rocks. Interestingly, in the summer, the surf flattens, making Waimea a swimmers beach.
