Wet Mountain Valley

Westcliffe, Colorado

With its spacious skies and amber waves of grain, majestic mountains and fruited planes, this is the kind of American landscape that might inspire you to write a patriotic song. Such sights certainly stoked the creative fire of Katherine Lee Bates when she wrote “America the Beautiful” in 1893. In fact, this rainbow sherbet sunset over the ranchlands of the quiet Wet Mountain Valley of Southern Colorado swirls just over 100 miles south of Pike’s Peak, where Bates first conceived the words of the famous anthem.
