Cantwell, Alaska
Scientists predict that conditions in 2013 are ripe for sightings of the otherworldly northern lights. Appearing suddenly, sometimes following a hiss, they unravel in a dark winter sky as a spindly swirl of color that might start with a pinkish glow, then finish with a curtain of luminous lime green. Most often seen in the far north, as in this photo taken near Cantwell, AK, the aurora borealis inspire awe among all who are lucky enough to see them.
