The bizarre, extraterrestrial-looking Spotted Lake, located near the city of Osoyoos in British Columbia, draws onlookers from across the globe. While it certainly looks like an anomaly, the science behind its appearance isn't quite so magical. Rich in various minerals, including magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulfates, the water evaporates each summer, resulting in spots of mineral residue ranging in color from milky white to crystalline blue. What was thought to be mystical, however, was the therapeutic value of the lake’s water. The natives of the Okanagan Valley, who called this place Kliluk, believed it could cure aches and ailments.
