Torres del Paine National Park

Patagonia, Chile

Arguably South America’s most splendid national park, Torres del Paine features granite pillars that reign over the Patagonian steppe. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978, it has a treasure trove of wildlife, including Andean condors, flamingos and guanacos (a sort of humpless camel), which, after years of protection, don’t even bat an eye when a car approaches. Wildlife aside, the park offers endless hiking trails through overgrown forests, dips in clear lakes, and its crowning glory, the Grey Glacier, which is accessible by a trek across a frozen lake, followed by short boat cruise.
