Colorful Zhangye Danxia

Gansu Province, China

These delightful rainbow-colored mountains in China’s Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park are the result of varying colors of minerals and sandstone being pressed together over 24 million years. When the tectonic plates later shifted, the land popped up, creating this fabulous, multihued landscape. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, it is a popular stop for tourists, who come here from nearby Zhangye. For maximum enjoyment, plan your trip in late spring, when there is perfect hiking weather, and invest in a local guide to show you the area’s best secret trails and vantage points.
