Korcula Island

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Marco Polo is rumored to have been born on this Croatian isle, one of about 1,200 in the Adriatic Sea. Its walled-in town was beautifully designed with narrow stone streets and red-roofed houses; since the Italians occupied the island from the 14th to the 18th centuries, many Venetian coats of arms also adorn official buildings. Many of Korcula’s cultural traditions have also withstood the test of time. These include traditional sword dance performances known as Moreška, which date back to the Middle Ages.
