Devil's Bridge

Smolyan, Bulgaria

There are dozens of medieval stone arch bridges throughout Europe that bear the “Devil” moniker, but one of the most notable is the Devil’s Bridge, the “Dyavolski most,” as it’s called in Bulgaria. This 188-foot-long bridge, which spans the Arda River, was built between 1515 and 1518. Although purportedly built by monks along a remote Roman trade route of old, this massive, 36-foot-high bridge barely rises above the floodwaters that roar down the gorge in spring. It’s best to view in the dry season.
