Les Calanques

Cassis, France

The South of France isn’t just about luxury yachts and beaches. West of the Cote d’Azur are Les Calanques, a 12-mile stretch from Cassis to Marseilles of spectacular limestone cliffs and valleys, forming inlets referred to as the fjords of the Mediterranean. You can hike or climb along the rocks, but seeing them via kayak helps preserve their delicate ecosystem --with hardly any soil, nearly 900 plant species sprout from the porous surface. Much of the calanques area was designated a national park in April 2012.
