Rocher de la Baume

Sisteron, France

The towering facade of Rocher de la Baume, which translates as “Rock of the Balm,” hovers over the little French village of Sisteron as it has for the past 4,000 years. And indeed, in its long history, this town on the edge of Provence needed all of the balm it could get -- it has, after all, suffered 7 plagues, not to mention attacks from Saracens and later, World War II bombers. Gaze upon this rocky edifice from the bridge above, the blue River Durance below, and marvel at all the triumphs and travails this town has witnessed.
