Marseille Cathedral

Marseille, France

The seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille, the Cathedrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille began construction in 1852 and was designated a basilica minor by the Roman Catholic Church in 1896. It is often passed over by tourists for its more famous counterpart, the neo-Byzantine basilica Notre Dame de la Garde. With Marseille Cathedral’s blend of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture, it’s easy to see why debates continue on which church is more stunning.
